SURGERY AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AT THE HEART CENTER VIETNAM NATIONAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL 2024

Abstract
Objectives: To describe nursing care outcomes and indentify factors associated with postoperative care among pediatric patients undergoing open-heart surgery at the Cardiovascular Center, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, in 2024.
Methods: A prospective descriptive- analytical studywas conducted on 208 pediatric patients who underwent open-heart surgery betweenFebruary and August 2024.
Results: Median age was 6 months, median weight 6.2 kg, and 30.3% were malnourished. Tachycardia and hypotension were common in the first 6-12 postoperative hours. Bleeding was the most frequent complication (9.6%). Favorable nursing care outcomes were achieved in 194 out of 208 patients (93.3%). Independent factors associated with poor nursing care outcomes included prolonged mechanical ventilation (>138.5 hours) and pleural drainage lasting more than 3.5 days, with corresponding odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 13.20 (1.28 - 136.50) and 6.72 (1.08 - 41.70), respectively.
Conclusion: Postoperative nursing care outcomes were generally favorable. Extended ventilation and prolonged pleural drainage were significant risk factors for poor outcomes. Continued adherence to care protocols and targeted interventions are needed to improve outcomes, especially in patients requiring prolonged pleural drainage or extended mechanical ventilation
