Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and describe the characteristics of surgical site infection in children undergoing open cardiac surgery with congenital heart disease at National Children’s Hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study from October 1st 2022 to September 30th 2023 in children (from 0 to 16 years old) undergoing open cardiac surgery, during the post-operative inpatient at National Children's Hospital, Viet Nam. To identify patients with surgical site infection based on the criteria of CDC in 2022. From there, to describe the characteristics of surgical site infection after open cardiac surgery.
Results: There were 62 on 1373 patients (4,5%) with surgical site infection, of which the majority was superficial incisional surgical site infection (85,5%). The time onset symptoms of surgical site infection was 5,45±2,14 (2–12) days post-operation. The main clinical symptoms were local swelling (85,5%), pus discharge from the infected wound (82,3%). Positive result of pus culture was recorded in 10,9% patients with surgical site infection.
Conclusion: Our study showed that the incidence of surgical site infection was 4,5%, of which the majority was superficial incisional surgical site infection. The main clinical symptoms were local swelling and pus discharge from the infected wound.
