Với nhiều tiến bộ về khoa học, kỹ thuật, ung thư trẻ em được coi là bệnh có thể chữa khỏi. Nguyên lý cơ bản chung trong điều trị ung thư trẻ em như sau:
* Đầu tiên phải có chẩn đoán chính xác bệnh, thể bệnh, giai đoạn bệnh, để lựa chon phương pháp trị liệu thích hợp, hiệu quả, hạn chế tác dụng phụ bất lợi.
* Lựa chọn liệu pháp toàn diện thích hợp, điều trị sớm, đúng liệu trình, điều trị đặc hiệu cơ bản và hỗ trợ, kết hợp điều trị nội và ngoại trú hợp lý.
* Đánh giá đầy đủ tiến triển, khả năng tái phát, tác dụng phụ bất lợi cấp và lâu dài của phương pháp điều trị.
* Điều trị ung thư trẻ em đòi hỏi có sự kết hợp của nhiều chuyên khoa, gồm ung thư lâm sàng nhi, mô bệnh học, huyết học, sinh học phân tử, chẩn đoán hình ảnh, phẫu thuật, xạ trị, điều dưỡng ung thư và nhiều hỗ trợ khác về dinh
dưỡng, dược lý, tâm lý, xã hội.
* Cần có các trung tâm chuyên sâu ung thư nhi, có sự phối hợp nhiều trung tâm và y tế địa phương có liên quan.
