Abstract

Taking care of a sick child can have an impact on a parent’s overall health as well as mental health in particular. Objective: To describe the state of stress, anxiety among parents of children which have pneumonia in Respiratory Center at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital in 2021. Methods: We conducted an analytical descriptive cross-sectional study, 100 parents of children diagnosed
with pneumonia in Respiratory Center at National Pediatrict Hospital were interviewed by using the Vietnam translation of depression, anxiety and stress scale DASS21. Result: 69.0% of researched objects appear to have anxiety, in which 47.8% are moderate while 42.0% are severe and extremely severe. The percentage of stressed parents takes up 58.0%, in which 41.4% are moderate and 29.3% are severe and extremely severe. The group of parents over 35 years old have a higher risk of stress, anxiety than the group under 35 (p<0.05). Additionally, parents of pediatric patients with more than 2 times of re-hospitalization for pneumonia treatment have a tendency to be more stressed
and anxious (p<0.05). Conclusion: The figure of parents with anxiety and stress accounts for a high proportion, mainly at moderate and severe/very severe levels. Parents’ age and a child’s number of re-hospitalizations are associated with the parents’ anxiety, stress.
