Abstract
Objective: To describe the current status of asthma treatment adherence among caregivers of children under 5 years old receiving outpatient asthma medication at the pediatric clinic of Ba Ria Hospital in 2025.
Methods: A questionnaire and the GMAS scale were used to interview caregivers of children with asthma attending the pediatric clinic at Ba Ria Hospital from 03/2025 to 10/2025. The study aimed to analyze and report the treatment adherence rate to asthma medication among caregivers of children under 5 years old receiving outpatient treatment at the pediatric clinic of Ba Ria Hospital in 2025.
Results: The study collected data from 85 cases of children under 5 years old with asthma who were examined, treated, and monitored at the pediatric clinic of Ba Ria Hospital over a period of four months. The results showed that children over 2 years old accounted for 75.3%, most were of Kinh ethnicity (94.1%), and 52.9% (45 children) were male while the remainder were female. Most caregivers were female (94.1%), aged under 30 years (68.2%), and the majority were the child’s parents (77.6%), while 9 caregivers were aunts. The caregivers’ educational level was mainly lower secondary school (58.8%), followed by upper secondary school (23.5%) and post-secondary education (11.8%). A total of 78 caregivers (91.8%) were married, while 7 were unmarried (these were the aunts). About 73% of caregivers were farmers. The overall medication adherence rate was 74.1%.
Conclusion: The treatment adherence rate in this study was 74.1%, which is higher than the average reported in several national and international studies. This result is considered relatively positive and may reflect the beneficial impact of the outpatient asthma clinic model, where caregivers receive medication instructions, counseling, and periodic follow-up.
