Abstract
Background: The PIRO score (Predisposition, Infection, Response, and Organ Dysfunction) was developed as a stratifcation tool to address the inherent heterogeneity among septic patients.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive performance of the PIRO scores in assessing mortality risk among septic children.
Design: A prospective observational study was conducted on septic children from April 2022 to June 2023 at the Pediatrics Center, Hue Central Hospital.
Results: Seventy-two patients with sepsis were monitored, and the PIRO scores were calculated upon admission. Patients were followed until discharge. The age group of 1-5 years accounted for the highest proportion at 47.2%. The rate of septic shock was 36.1%, and the mortality rate was 27.8%. The PIRO median was 1 (0-2) points. A PIRO score of 1.5 demonstrated the capability to predict mortality risk, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.86. The sensitivity and specifcity were 75.0% and 80.8%, respectively.
Conclusion: The PIRO score exhibited the ability to effectively predict mortality risk in septic children.
