Tháng 12/2019 tại thành phố Vũ Hán, Trung Quốc, xuất hiện một nhóm người bị viêm phổi không rõ nguyên nhân, được liên kết chủ yếu với người làm việc tại chợ hải sản Hoa Nam được báo cáo. Các ca nghi ngờ đầu tiên được báo cáo
vào ngày 31/12/2019, với các triệu chứng đầu tiên xuất hiện vào ngày 08/12/2019. Các nhà khoa học Trung Quốc sau đó đã phân lập được một loại virus Corona hoàn toàn mới (ban đầu WHO ký hiệu là 2019-nCoV, sau đó chính thức đặt tên SARS-CoV-2, bệnh là COVID-19), được phát hiện có trình tự gen giống ít nhất 70% với SARS-CoV
