Abstract

Human herpesvirus-7 (HHV-7) is a ubiquitous virus belonging to the β-herpesvirinae subfamily. Little is known about the association of clinical features with neuroinvasiveness of HHV-7 in immunocompetent children. We report a case of a 9-year-old male child, previously healthy, hospitalized at the Peadiatric Center of Bach Mai Hospital, diagnosed with meningoencephalitis caused by HHV-7 based on results of isolation in cerebrospinal fluid by multiplex PCR method. He was admitted to the hospital with high fever, seizures, drowsiness, clear meningeal syndrome, cerebrospinal fluid changes, brain MRI showed damage to the medial temporal gyrus, thalamus and lateral brain stem. Right. The child was diagnosed with: encephalitis - meningitis caused by HHV-7, treated with the antibiotic Ceftriaxone combined with Acyclovir for 21 days. the child suffered from left hemiplegia, emotional and behavioral disorders, and circular muscle disorders. The clinical picture of meningoencephalitis caused by HHV-7 infection in children is very diverse. There is currently no evidence of a therapeutic effect of antiviral therapy for HHV-7-associated central nervous system infections.
